In June 1977 a small group of like-minded villagers got together and formed The Bricket Wood Society with the aim of researching and recording all aspects of local life, flora and fauna from past and present times.
Since that time a large number of items have been collected and indexed creating a village archive that covers all the various aspects of Bricket Wood from early times, through the coming of the railway and subsequent development, to the present day. A photographic record of many of the changes that have taken place in this time, has also been maintained.
The Archive is held in the restored Bricket Wood Station building and a member of the Society is present on Wednesday mornings 10am - 12noon, or at other times by arrangement, to assist anyone who is interested in the history of the village and the surrounding area or has a specific enquiry.
Several publications have been produced. These include ‘Bricket Wood in Old Picture Postcards’, ‘A Souvenir of Bricket Wood’ and ‘The Fairgrounds of Bricket Wood 1889-1929’. Also, two extensive works published are 'All My Worldly Goods' Volumes 1 & 2, an insight into family life from wills and inventories, covering Bricket Wood and Park Street.
Mugs, tea towels, placemats, and coasters depicting scenes of the fairground in Lye Lane and the railway in the early part of the last century when Bricket Wood was a day out in the country for many people, are also available.
Our focus lies in maintaining and developing the Bricket Wood Archive for the benefit of both residents and visitors to the area. The Society produces local interest articles for publication in The Voice, the quarterly newsletter of the Bricket Wood Residents Association. The Society is present at local village events with merchandise for sale and, where possible, with a themed historical display and at our AGM we invite a guest speaker to talk about a topic of local interest - all are welcome.
